The USS Enterprise Association maintains and funds a scholarship program, to award deserving applicants a small monetary contribution for their educational benefit. Applicants are reviewed against a graded criteria by the Association staff and officers. The Association members, in attendance at our annual reunion, are presented the applicants, their application ranking and a suggested award. The attending members make amendments to the suggested awards, as necessary, and vote on final award approvals.

Eligible applicants may be awarded a scholarship in any amount, up to $2000, as a one-time grant. Scholarships may be awarded to as many deserving applicants as determined by the Association staff and officers.

WELCOME

The USS Enterprise Association is pleased that you have decided to pursue higher education and training after completing high school. The Association is honored that you have requested assistance from us with obtaining your educational goals. The Association requires information from each applicant, based on their current educational level (High School student or College student). All applicants will be evaluated fairly and objectively. To accomplish our evaluation, the applicant must complete the appropriate application form and submit all applicable documentation to the Scholarship Committee Chairman before the application deadline.

Incomplete applications will not be evaluated. The applicant will be notified of the deficiencies, allowed to revise their application and resubmit, if sufficient time exists before the application deadline.


SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

The Association shall award scholarships of different amounts, as determined by the Association Board of Directors and approved by the membership at the annual reunion. Awards may be granted to more than one (1) applicant per year. The Association may award scholarships, in any amount and no more than $2,000.00 per student, as a one-time grant.

ELIGIBILITY

Applicant must be:

  • a USS Enterprise crew member, or

  • a dependent of a USS Enterprise crew member, or

  • a direct descendant (grandchild/great-grandchild, etc.) of a USS Enterprise crew member, or

  • a non-ship’s crew USS Enterprise Association member in good standing or dependent, thereof (These applicants are eligible if there are no other applicants from the previous bullets above).

 

DEADLINE FOR APPLICATION SUBMISSION

The applicant must be sponsored by a USS Enterprise Association member in good standing.The application and supporting documentation must be received by the Scholarship Committee Chairman by no later than June 10 of the year of application. 

QUALIFICATIONS OF APPLICANT

The applicant must be enrolled as a full-time student in the upcoming fall semester at an accredited college or university. Scholarship award must be used for undergraduate studies, leading to a bachelor’s degree.

Applicant’s sponsor must be a member of the USS Enterprise Association at least one (1) year prior to application date. Sponsor information must be completely filled in for consideration.

Applicants, who are former crew members of the USS Enterprise, do not require a sponsor. But they must be a member of the USS Enterprise (CVAN/CVN-65) Association for at least one (1) year prior to the application date.

The applicant must sign the application, authorizing the USS Enterprise Association to announce and publish their information as described in the authorizations section. The applicant’s sponsor must also sign the application that authorizes the USS Enterprise Association to announce and publish their information as described in the authorizations section.

The Association has provided 2 different application forms, one designated for student applicants who are currently attending high school and the other former crew members or currently attending college. The other application Applicant and sponsor must complete the appropriate application form, in its entirety, to be considered for a scholarship award. Incomplete applications will not be evaluated, but the applicant will be allowed to revise their application. The revised application must be received prior to the application deadline.

SCORING AND SELECTION PROCESS

The Scholarship Committee Chairman shall evaluate each scholarship submittal and supporting documentation. The evaluation, utilizing the criteria defined in the USS Enterprise Association by-laws. The Scholarship Committee Chairman shall verify all documentation submitted with the application, using any appropriate means available to ascertain the accuracy and validity of the submitted information.

Incomplete applications will not be evaluated. If sufficient time is available prior to the application deadline, the Scholarship Committee Chairman shall contact the applicant and allow them the opportunity to rectify and amend their application. The deadline for submission of the revised/amended application will not be extended for the applicant.

The criteria shall generally use the following criteria to assess the applicant’s submittal.

  • Grade point (cumulative) X 10 points for a high school student

  • Grade point (cumulative) X 5 points for a college student.

  • Total number of verified hours of volunteer service performed X 1 point hour (maximum 15 points).

  • Applicant and/or sponsor involvement in Association activities (5 to 25 points as recommended by the Scholarship Chairman and at the discretion of the Association Board).

  • Verified paid work while a full-time student (1 point per hour per week) (maximum 15 points).

  • Verified extracurricular activity and/or honor (1 point each, No maximum) Points awarded at the discretion of the Scholarship Chairman

  • Scholarship essay, as demonstration of skills and documentation. (20 points maximum, with up to 10 points for quality of message and up to 10 points for grammar, spelling, and punctuation).

The Board of Directors shall allocate awards based on their discretion and available funds within the Scholarship Fund budget. Awarded scholarships may be in any amount and no more than $2,000.00 per student, as a one-time grant.

Prior to the USS Enterprise Association annual reunion, the Scholarship Committee Chairman shall total the scores of each applicant’s submittal. The Chairman will advise the Association Board of Directors, as to the applications received and the evaluation of each. The Board of Directors will determine the scholarship award recipients based on the Scholarship Committee Chairman’s advice and the Board’s discretion.

During the annual reunion and at the first meeting of the General Membership of the USS Enterprise Association, the Board of Directors shall announce the award recipients and the recommended scholarship award values. The award process and reasoning may be discussed. The General Membership may accept, reject or suggest revision of the scholarships to be awarded. The General Membership shall have the final determination vote and approval for awarding scholarships.

Award of the scholarship will be made to the applicant as soon as practical after the annual reunion of the USS Enterprise Association.

AUTHORIZATIONS

Applicant awardees and sponsors must authorize (by signature) the USS Enterprise Association to announce and publish their name, proposed school, proposed major, award amount, sponsor name, former rank/rate, time aboard the USS Enterprise and division/department.

During the final banquet dinner, the Association shall announce the scholarship award recipients, their sponsors, their intended school, their major course of studies, and award amount. The Association may also publish this information on the Association website and/or in the Association newsletter.

The Association may publish the award recipient’s application essay in the Association newsletter or website, at the discretion of the Board of Directors. Any other notes of recognition and appreciation may also be published at the discretion of the Association.

The Association will not publish nor disclose any information about the scholarship awardee or sponsor, such as date of birth, current physical address, phone numbers, email, grades, grade point average (GPA), national test results, or other personally identifiable information.


APPLICATION COMPLETION AND SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION

 

GENERAL INFORMATION

  1. The application form should be completed preferably typewritten. Otherwise, neatly and legibly print all information.

  2. Applicants must complete all parts and answer all questions of the Personal Information section of the Scholarship Application form.

  3. Obtain a recent photo (passport size or similar) of the applicant. Place the photo in an envelope and include with the application submittal.

  4. The applicant must sign and date the acknowledgement and agreement section.

  5. The sponsor section must be completed. The sponsor must sign and date the acknowledgement and agreement section.

If the applicant is a former crew member applying for a scholarship, they may self-sponsor. However, the applicant must be a member of the USS Enterprise Association for at least one year.

 

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT APPLICATION FORM INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Include a copy of your most recent Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) or American College Test (ACT) with the application submittal.

  2. Submit a copy of your high school grade transcripts with the application submittal.

  3. Obtain a recommendation from your high school Guidance Counselor or Principal for the USS Enterprise Scholarship award. Include with the application submittal.

  4. On a separate sheet of paper, list three (3) personal references, who are not related to you. Include their name, mailing address, email and phone number. Include with the application submittal.

  5. Write a 100-250 word essay on “Why You Feel You Deserve a Scholarship from the USS Enterprise Association”.

  6. List any school and community activities that you have participated in. These activities should be outside of normal school activities or curricula. Activities that coincide with school functions but are outside standard school curricula may be listed. DO NOT include regular or standard school curricular class activities. Use a separate sheet to list activities, if needed. Include with the application submittal.

  7. List any employment information while attending high school. Include a copy of each listed employer pay stub with the application submittal, as evidence of work performed. Use a separate sheet to list multiple, if needed. Include with the application submittal.

  8. List any volunteer work performed. Include the organization, address, phone number, email, supervisor or point of contact, and period of work. Use a separate sheet to list activities, if needed. Include with the application submittal.

  9. List any honors and awards received. Use a separate sheet to list multiple entries, if needed. Include with the application submittal.

  10. List any memberships in societies, social organizations, fraternal groups or community service agencies that you are actively participating in. Use a separate sheet to list multiple entries, if needed. Include with the application submittal.

 

COLLEGE STUDENT & FORMER CREW MEMBER APPLICATION FORM INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Include a copy of your most recent Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) or American College Test (ACT) with the application submittal.

  2. Submit a copy of your most recent college grade transcripts with the application submittal.

  3. Obtain a recommendation from your Academic Dean or Academic Advisor for the USS Enterprise Scholarship award. Include with the application submittal.

  5. Write a 100-250 word essay on “Why You Feel You Deserve a Scholarship from the USS Enterprise Association”.
